PPL Ground School Online in the UK (2026): Courses, Apps and Question Banks Compared

When I started my PPL theory, I typed "PPL ground school online" into Google and got a wall of options that all claimed to be the best. Courses, apps, question banks, e-books. None of them told me what I'd actually get for my money until I'd already paid.

So here's the comparison I wanted back then. A quick disclosure first: I built Aviari, so I'm biased. That's exactly why every tick in the table below comes from each provider's own website or App Store listing, checked on 8 October 2026. Where a provider doesn't say whether it has something, the table says "Not stated", not "No". Judge it for yourself.

What you actually get: PPL ground schools compared

A few things jump out. Audio, flashcards and a study plan are rare: of the providers here, only Aviari says it offers them, which matters if you revise on the commute. Aviari is also the only one offering study cohorts. And a "question bank" is not the same as a course: some products are mostly practice questions, which is great for revision but thin if you're learning a subject from zero.

Deciding between two of them? There are side-by-side pages for Easy PPL and Aviari and Bristol Groundschool and Aviari.

Features in a table only tell you so much. What you'll actually feel, every day, is what the course is like to use. Here's what studying with Aviari looks like.

Online ground school vs classroom vs books

You can study for the UK PPL theory exams any way you like. The CAA cares about the exams, not where you learned. What's fixed is how you sit them: every exam is taken through the CAA's e-Exams system, at your flying school, with an authorised examiner. Your school books it once they're happy you're ready.

So the real choice is how you learn best:

• Books (Pooleys, AFE) are thorough but heavy, and they don't test you.
• Classroom ground school gives you a teacher, but you're tied to their dates and location.
• Online PPL ground school lets you study on your own schedule, on your phone or laptop, and test yourself as you go.

Most students I speak to end up online, usually alongside a few books from their school.

Do you need a PPL question bank as well as a course?

Practice questions are how you find out whether you actually know something. Reading a chapter feels like learning. Answering ten questions on it tells you the truth.

If you're choosing a PPL question bank in the UK, check three things:

1. It's written to the UK CAA syllabus (or EASA, if you're training in Europe). The rules differ in places, especially Air Law.
2. It explains the answers. A bank that only marks you right or wrong teaches you to memorise, not understand.
3. It has full mock exams, not just topic quizzes. A mock with the real number of questions and the real time limit is the best rehearsal you'll get.

Aviari includes topic quizzes and a full mock exam for every subject, so you don't need a separate question bank. You can try real questions for free in the PPL Air Law exam guide.

What makes the best PPL exam app?

Most of your revision happens in small gaps: a lunch break, a train, ten minutes before a lesson. So the best PPL exam app is the one you'll actually open. Look for:

• Works on your phone without a laptop
• Short sessions: flashcards and 10-question drills, not just hour-long chapters
• Audio, so you can revise when you can't look at a screen
• Progress tracking, so you know which subject is next

UK CAA or EASA PPL theory online?

If you're training in the UK, you need the UK CAA syllabus. If you're training in an EASA country, you need EASA. Most of the content overlaps, but Air Law and some procedures differ, so check which one a course is written to before you pay. Aviari is written to the UK CAA and EASA syllabus.

How to choose your PPL ground school

1. Decide how you learn best: reading, listening, watching, or testing yourself.
2. Check the course covers all 9 subjects and the right syllabus.
3. Check it has full mock exams, not just quizzes.
4. Try before you buy: use a free trial on your first subject, usually Air Law.
5. Check how long you get access. Most students need longer than they expect.
